Jackson, Hancock {Gov.} -- "Many of our readers, particularly those who are old residents of this county, will deeply regret to learn the death of Gov. Hancock Jackson who died at Salem Oregon very recently, after a long & painful illness. Governor Jackson was among the oldest & best citizens of Randolph county. He was the first sheriff of the county, to which position he was several times re-elected. He subsequently represented the county in the State Convention called to revise the Constitution in 1845. He was afterwards elected to the State Senate where he became so popular as a man, a legislator & a parliamentarian that he was nominated & elected on the Democratic ticket for Lieut. Governor of this state, in 1856. By the election of Gov. Polk to the U. S. Senate, Hancock Jackson became Governor of Missouri. Such was the popularity of his administration, that he was nominated for Governor on the Breckenridge Democratic ticket in the campaign of 1860. The Douglass Democracy under the lead of Claib Jackson were the stronger, however, and the Breckenridge ticket was defeated. The war followed soon after, & the political career of Gov. Jackson was brought to a close. He remained a citizen of Randolph from the date of its organization up to the year 1865 when he moved to Oregon where he resided until his death."; MDM Friday 7 Apr 1876
